Lateral Incentives
- 3%@50 for classic PERS members
- Possible advanced base salary step based on law enforcement experience.
- Possible accelerated vacation accrual rate based on law enforcement experience.
- Possible vacation and sick time matching based on law enforcement experience.
Earn Pay While Attending the Police Academy
- MPD will pay you $43.64/ hour to attend the Police Academy, pay your tuition, and provide your equipment.
- Benefits while attending the academy include health, dental, and vision insurance.
- Earn PERS retirement credit while attending the academy.
- The minimum qualifications for Police Trainee are:
- Any education equivalent to graduation from high school
- Be at least 21 years of age
- Not have any felony convictions
- Be able to pass a comprehensive background
- Possess a valid California Driver's License at time of appointment
- Be a United States citizen or have permanent resident alien status and applied for citizenship

Never stop learning
Officers are eligible for special assignments and promotion within 18 months. With four year rotating assignments opportunities are plentiful.
Investigations
Take on the most complex cases.
7.5% incentive pay. Special Response Unit
Be part of a multi-agency SWAT team as an operator, breecher, sniper, team leader, or commander.

Traffic Officer
Ride a motorcycle, enforce traffic laws, and investigate collisions. 5% incentive pay.
Department Instructor
Firearms, defensive tactics, first aid, active shooter, taser, ICAT (de-escalation),
and more. |
Community Action Team
Tackle community issues such as homelessness. Ride E-bikes, ATVs, or drive a police SUV. 5% incentive pay.
Field Training Officer
Develop and mentor new Officers as they begin their law enforcement journey. 5% incentive pay.

Officer Joey Parigi began his career at MPD in 2020. He is a graduate of Monterey High School and Sonoma State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. Officer Parigi has a background in sports and played in the German Bundesliga of Professional Baseball.
Officer Lee Doyle began his career at MPD in 2020. He is a graduate of Fresno State and speaks Spanish fluently. In his free time, Lee enjoys working out, going to hockey games, and watching the Steelers win on Sundays.

Sergeant Jeremiah Ruttschow began his career at MPD in 2005. A Navy veteran, Sergeant Ruttschow has held assignments in Field Training, Investigations, the Special Response Unit, and is currently assigned as the Administrative Sergeant. He enjoys mountain biking, hiking and travel.
Records & Detention Supervisor Alma Murphy has been with the MPD since 2004 when she was hired as a Police Services Technician. She is a Monterey County native and during her time off, she enjoys spending time with friends and family.
Officer Juan Castro was born and raised in Monterey County. He joined MPD in 2023 after working as a deputy for the Monterey County Sheriff's Office. Juan enjoys spending time with his family during time off. His hobbies include baseball, boxing, mountain biking, and golf.

FTO Officer Jesse Phillips trains our new Officers and has a degree in criminal justice from Chico State. In his free time he enjoys off-roading, golf and playing Dungeons & Dragons.
Officer McKenna Hill began her career with MPD in 2019, where she currently serves as a Patrol Officer and Active Shooter Defense Instructor. Officer Hill is a graduate of CSU Monterey Bay where she played basketball for the Otters. Officer Hill has been to fifteen different countries and loves to travel!
